Pathological Demand Avoidance Course

A three part course for parents/carers of children and young people who present with the PDA profile of Autism, who live, or attend a school, in Berkshire.

Although PDA cannot yet be formally diagnosed in its own right, there is growing awareness and recognition of the PDA profile as a distinct Autism Spectrum Condition that is best managed with specific strategies that can differ from those used for other types of Autism. This course is for parents and carers of young people who present with PDA, whether or not they have received any diagnosis.

Topics Covered Include:

Session 1: Understanding PDA

  • What PDA is (and what it isn’t)
  • Differences from other forms of Autism and ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder)
  • Anxiety and PDA
  • Strengths and challenges
  • Issues around PDA recognition and diagnosis

Session 2: Strategies for managing PDA – Part 1

  • Strategies for managing PDA
  • Handling challenging behaviours
  • ‘Collaborative parenting’
  • Self-care and signposting for support

Session 3: Strategies for managing PDA – Part 2

  • Further strategies for parents and carers
  • Supporting your PDA’er to self-manage
  • Supporting other family members – especially siblings
  • Schooling and education
  • Supporting PDA’ers to learn

Please note: This course is only suitable for Parents/Carers. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide childcare, or accommodate children.
