Challenges for children affected by alcohol during pregnancy – Zoom
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause a woman’s baby to be born with a wide range of physical, behavioural and learning difficulties. They may not be detected at birth but can become apparent in later life and carry lifelong implications. Many children born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are not diagnosed correctly. As a result, their struggles may go unnoticed, and they may not receive the support they need.
The workshop will cover an overview of challenges caused by exposure to alcohol in the womb and their presentations, the continuum of needs and a range of holistic strategies to support children affected by it.
It will be delivered by Nuala Hemphill, who has over 35 years experience as a teacher and manager in education, focusing on additional learning, emotional and behavioural support needs. In addition, she is an adult psychotherapist and a specialist trainer in trauma defences, reactive attachment, foetal alcohol syndrome, anxiety and ADHD. She is also an adopter and a kinship grandparent carer.
